Summary:

The Ukrainian-Polish dispute that arose for a long-time historic development, influence on the present relationship between neighboring peoples. Many specialists in humanitarian sciences attempted to highlight the reasons of disagreements between Nations, and find the ways of reconciliation. A significant place to this problem is in the intellectual scientific writings of the Ukrainian writer, philosopher, the national and cultural worker of the nineteenth century Panteleimon Kulish. The article highlightes the Ukrainian historian views on factors of forming the Polish nation, its political culture, mentality and possibility of achieving the Polish-Ukrainian agreement in the last quarter of the 19th century.

The presented visions of the nineteenth century explain real reasons of the lag of Ukrainian identity development, prove the political cultures differences of both peoples, pointing to a number of key political problems in relation to Ukrainians, allowed by Polish rulers. Among the mental traits of the Polish nation, which had a positive national character, a historian called State patriotism, love for the heroic history and national symbols. But, according to Kulish thinking, the political culture of the Poles connected by quite opposite things: 1) the pride of their Republican system, contrasting its benefits to other forms of Government; 2) their negligence with interests and needs of common people, Polish triviality and fanatical belief in their right, intolerance to other religions.

As the main condition of the Ukrainian-Polish reconciliation Panteleimon Kulish called the ending of historical debates and mutual actions of interpretations of the past.

Key words: Panteleimon Kulish, Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation, Polish-Ukrainian relationship, historical mentality.
